Talc Powder & Cancer: What’s the Connection?

Ovarian Cancer

Multiple studies have identified up to and beyond a 90% increased risk of ovarian cancer in women who regularly use talc powder on or around their genitals. Symptoms include:

  • Bloating
  • Weight loss
  • Constipation or other bowel issues
  • Feeling full quickly while eating
  • Frequent urination

Mesothelioma

Additionally, inhaling talc powder has been linked to an increased risk of mesothelioma, a type of cancer affecting the thin layer of tissue that covers most of your internal organs. Symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Painful coughing
  • Lumps under the skin around the chest

How Could This Happen?

Prolonged exposure to talc-based products like J&J Baby Powder has been repeatedly linked to an increased risk of serious illness, dating back to the 1970s. How could manufacturers let this happen?

To understand how thousands of people could be harmed by a product they trusted to be safe, we must go back to the source–literally. In nature, talc deposits naturally occur near deposits of asbestos, a deadly carcinogen. When mining for talc, it can be contaminated with asbestos. However, even talc that hasn’t been contaminated can be dangerous.

Scientists began discovering talc particles embedded deep in ovarian tumors. We now understand that these women were at a greater risk for ovarian cancer simply by including a talc-based powder in their feminine hygiene routine.

Dr. Daniel Brietkopf, an expert in obstetrics and gynecology at the Mayo Clinic, stresses:

“There is some evidence that talc particles may migrate through the genital tract, through the uterus and fallopian tubes, thus exposing the ovaries and lining of the pelvic organs to the substance. Whether talc particles cause ovarian cancer has not been definitively proven by scientists. Given the uncertainty regarding talc, it seems prudent to limit its use in the genital area.”

Additional research showed that inhaling talc powder can increase a person’s risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma.

Verdicts and Settlements Against J&J

For decades, J&J continued to manufacture its talc-based powder and market it as perfectly safe to use. It wasn’t until 2020, more than 10 years after the first baby powder lawsuit was filed, that J&J announced it would discontinue talc-based products in the United States and Canada.

Years of inaction from J&J can be linked to thousands of cancer diagnoses in customers who trusted their product for decades. Thankfully, the courts have sided again and again with victims who allege talc powder caused their cancer.

2016
A jury awarded $55 million to Gloria Ristesund, who was being treated for ovarian cancer after using J&J baby powder for decades.
2017
Eva Echeverria received a $417 million verdict after using baby powder daily since the 1950s and developing stage 4 ovarian cancer.
2018
Stephen Lanzo was awarded $37 million in compensatory damages and $80 million in punitive damages against J&J over claims that he contracted mesothelioma after exposure to contaminated talc powder products.
2019
A jury awarded $30 million to Teresa Leavitt who was diagnosed with mesothelioma, caused by using J&J talcum powder.
2020
A court of appeals upheld a previous $2 billion verdict on behalf of 22 women who alleged talc powder caused their ovarian cancer.
2021
A jury awarded $26.4 million to Christina Prudencio, who claimed J&J’s asbestos-contaminated talc products caused her to develop mesothelioma.
